Can you work while deployed: I believe it is a DoD-wide requirement that outside employment be approved by your command. I find it highly unlikely you get that approval on a deployment, although if it were 100% asynchronous work and you had a predictable schedule, you might have a chance.
Tax implications: civilian pay will not be tax free.
Rising Star
Big Air Force vibes coming from this post.
“Sorry, Brian I’m going to need to get you these slides tomorrow, we had another mortar come down and knock out my PC.”
Navy too. Deployed to the…ocean? Thailand? Who knows
… we must have different definitions of “deployment”
When I was downrange, we didn’t have free time, we didn’t have electricity, and people were shooting at us. Would have been hard to keep up a side hustle.
The term deployment means just leaving your house for an extended period of time now. Back when I was in, 2005-2011, it meant you were living in Iraq or Afgan dirt for 7 months.
What?! And that "what" is coming from an Air Force guy.
I can only imagine the havock that would ensue if I logged into a client system from Iraq.
No rule against it but outside gigs require command approval and no way anyone approves that in a down range situation lol
Navy here, we worked 12 on/12 off while underway at sea so there was a bit of downtime but we were encouraged to work on command quals and career advancement with that time.. also would've needed approval from the command for anything earning extra income. Keep your mental health in mind and make sure you're not stretching yourself too thin as this can impact your safety as well as those around you.
You should not attempt it, you will likely end up letting your civilian employer down. It’s a promise you can’t really keep. USERRA is there for a reason, you need full military leave to deploy, but you get to come back to work when it’s done.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaaaa.....
You should be ALL IN on deployment. If you think you're going to have time for your civilian job, you're letting someone down. In my experience, letting people down lead to people dying. No matter the circumstances, combat theater or not, reevaluate your commitments.
I would love to have a part-time work to utilize my free time while on deployment. But I wouldn't have the energy for. sure
Navy vet here. The only people I could envision this remotely working for is non-warfare specialists who don’t stand watch (chaplains, journalists, public relations, etc.). Anyone standing watch or involved in primary shipboard operations (Ops, engineering, deck, combat systems, etc) will be far too busy.
Seriously? I’ll play. I suppose that’s a good question? That would determine what a “deployment” is. It you are on a UDP to Oki, I mean, why not. If you Command approves a part-time to work at the PX or MWR, why not. My honest, honest opinion, if you have time for a part-time, you must be a part-time service member like all these wannabe Influencers on TikTok and Instagram. These service members these days worry more about their likes than their MOS. If you ever wonder where everyone from S1 is, they are all at their Open Houses or at the gym positing videos than doing their Government Job.
😂😂😂
Air Force, and military overall (I believe) requires commander approval before second jobs. Doubt you will get that in a deployed environment.
Is this for real?
Incoming mortars and ieds made a PT job untenable for me. Experiences may vary.
I did deliver pizzas after deployment for beer money for 2 months
