Absolutely worth it. IT consultant> niche it consultant> SME/Lead/Dir at Start-up. All within 3-4 years. A little luck, lots of parents duas, good mentors, a little luck, and great place I'm at now
I wish I became a sme in a specific topic. Being a generalist is scary
Should be doable just may take some time. Generalists are a dime a dozen, SMEs can be highly valuable depending on the expertise and are far less common. Easy to replace generalist, not so much an SME.
Absolutely has paid off. Was able to do it within same firm a few times, left briefly for the outside world, and leveraged that to come back to original firm and get into highest rung of leadership. The diversity of experience and exposure was key in making that happen. My peers who stuck with a more traditional path haven’t progressed as quick.
Yes. consulting to start up to start up and now interviewing at FAANG.
Make way more than my consulting peers while having better WLB. Not being client facing awards you so much more freedom. I have also become much more technical and now my area of responsibility inside and out
