For those who switched from biglaw to hanging a shingle, did you completely change practice areas? Any advice or things to consider?

I’ve always wondered this. I’m in finance right now. Seems hard to do your own thing with that. Was wondering if you can pull a random M&A or “business law” business out of that and be semi successful

Recently quit big law, but wasn’t quite comfortable with hanging up a shingle yet because my 7-year big law stint wasn’t marketable in that sense. I went to work for a family law firm, only to find out that it was absolutely as bad as people had warned me. I’m currently working with my husband who has his own practice (employment law). No real advice, except be certain when you leave big law that you’ll have no regrets about leaving it. Big law sucks in a lot of ways, but it’s also cushiony. If you leave big law, know that you’ll likely get your freedom back, but there’s more risk involved. Maybe that’ll motivate you, maybe that won’t.

Been getting some interesting ads in Georgia. Got a letter about how Jon Ossoff is going to destroy Georgia’s economy and attacking him and his character. This was generated by David Perdue.

Ossoffs response? Bring up all the ridiculousness Perdue has done and how he’s left Georgia in a worse position. Didn’t say Ossoffs name once, just said get rid of Perdue.

However he also revealed he started seeing someone casually 4 weeks ago and technically is cheating on her by meeting me for coffee and to discuss this. I’m upset that he’s dating others but shouldn’t be right? I mean, I did the same. Still hurts though. And I told him to sort that out

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.
