I hope this helps propel a long and overdue conversation regarding this kind of behavior that women have and continue to experience with certain men at industry events and the workplace.
I also applaud these brave women for filing a formal complaint. The legal process is just starting for them and the road to justice will be tremendously challenging for them, but hopefully they get the support and resources needed to make the perv in question an example.
It’s sad this happened and it’s sad bc we all are aware of the existence of covert predators disguised as ‘professional colleagues ’ but maybe it’s time we all start making an effort to vet and protect our industry from creepy people.
This💯
It’s the same feeeling I had when I received a claim notification in the mail that a group of “kids” - the *us-* - had taken Condé Nast to court. It isn’t about the fact that they had the means to do so. It’s about the fact that they did. And won for us all.
If this is true, time to name and shame
Some Account Manager DMed this commenter with a threatening message assuming it was me posting (wild), so I redownloaded fishbowl to say I agree with this commenter and to give a hearty congrats on making nothing of yourself to the Account Manager ❤️❤️❤️
Women in this industry have been silenced for too long. I was sexually assaulted at a work party by the nephew of the president at my agency. Take a guess at what HR told me.
HR is, and always will be the devil. Soulless, gutless, gaslighting turds who will protect only those that sign their paychecks or have their names on the front door.
Another reason Cannes is dumb.
Alas, if Diet Madison Ave still existed...
Their approach was amateurIsh and reckless and frankly hurt the cause of legit claims, they didn’t care if they destroyed innocent people as long as they got a couple guilty ones
Yes but lots of very true claims as well.
Why would someone claim something if it wasn’t true? Weird comment.
I remember another post on the bowl about how few young people there were at Cannes in these last few years. As I commented then, before the MeToo movement, a lot of the young agency people who were sent to Cannes (without any work in contention for an award) were basically sent there so some married, senior doofus could hit on them. MeToo and diet Madison Avenue cut into that practice. But these were kids not even at an agency yet. Still in school! Somebody probably thought they were less of a risk. This industry is along way from what MeToo hoped to achieve.
What?!? This isn’t the ad business I know. 🙃🙃🙃
Can anyone give those of us without a subscription a copy and paste assist? Tried archive but it archived it with the paywall. 🙄
What I got from the Adweek email:
The dust might have settled on Cannes Lions 2024 over two months ago, but for two U.S. undergraduate marketing students, Emma and Julie, what they experienced during the annual event is still very much raw.
The 20-year-old women went to Cannes in June as part of an educational program. When they landed, they were excited to learn from creatives and see the work. By the time they left, they’d spent hours in a French police station, each filing a report of sexual assault against an ad industry contractor following an alleged incident at the Carlton Hotel in the early hours of June 20.
After months of reporting, I can share their story today.
Their account follows festival organizers partnering with industry groups including timeTo, to tackle sexual harassment at the annual gathering. A Cannes Lions spokesperson said its security teams are briefed to intervene, record and report any offensive or dangerous behavior.
ADWEEK is using pseudonyms for the women with their permission. We are also aware of their identities, as well as the identity of the man they have accused of sexual assault. Through his lawyer, the man said their account is “entirely false.”
The women were prepared to go public but decided not to after they each received a letter threatening a lawsuit. They told ADWEEK they did not have the resources to defend themselves in court.
Emma and Julie hope that in speaking out, they can spur more “safety and accountability” for women and students at the festival.
Until tomorrow,

She should have hit him in the face. If that happened to me you better believe I’d be deported out the country for battery.
We all say that until it happens to us.
💯
Rising Star
Just to set the stage. The Carlton Garden at night is relatively darkly lit. And even with the crowds nearby inside and on the street late night, this area is pretty vacant.
