General tax partners in a tax account leader type role or equivalent : approx what % of your book of business are you actually being paid? I get maybe 10-15% of the BOB and generating significant cross LOB sales and growth. I’m struggling to rationalize why the juice is worth the squeeze. Is it like this at all major (top 10) firms? Is there an extended victory lap at the end of my career where all the performers subsidize my final paydays that wasn’t communicated to me?

At a big 4 firm and that’s not the way our firm compensates partners. Larger books correlate with more responsibility, so generally higher distributions, but there’s really no direct correlation between size of book and compensation. You can have partners with big books just milking existing clients and conversely partners with smaller books who are actively developing new projects and clients. My opinion is that we should be measured on the totality of our contributions.

“We are a tenured organization” is what I keep being told. I’m about 15% of my direct bob at big4.

If everyone voted with their feet, we’d have it shift I’m sure.

Certainly partner comp isn’t determined as a percent of your book. I suspect it will vary across firms. Not sure about a victory lap, but the model is designed so you mentor and train younger folks to replace you and continue building to pay your retirement. That’s a tougher model with smaller firms which is why there is so many acquisitions. Is it worth the squeeze, in theory no. If I could generate 3-4m of business alone, then being at a firm doesn’t make sense. But in most case It might take years to build that yourself with no named firm behind you. If I had that kind of surplus to live off of for a few years, I’d go on my own.

Are you basing that off of gross revenue?

Hi All,

I am looking for a Client Success/Relationship Management role. I have 3 yrs of experience in the healthcare industry as an Onboarding Supervisor, and a Lab Success and Process Optimization specialist. I am also open to an entry level role as long as it pays a livable wage. These pandemic years have been tough and I was laid off 6 months ago so if anyone knows of any positions or is able to write me a referral I would greatly appreciate it.

I want a house. I don’t think I should plan my wants around waiting on some future man. With that, I am set on getting a house. I am wondering how big it should be bc it’s just me. No man, no kids. I want a nice, big house but I am wondering if that make sense. Why? Should I just stay in my aprtmnt?

What are thoughts on EY. They have called me and want to chat with me about taking over a service line in my city. I am at a top 10 firm now and is my second stop as a partner in PA. I don’t want to be constantly moving firms but opportunities keep coming up at larger and larger shops. No prior B4 experience so needing a little insight if it is worth it.

Has your firm gone woke? My leadership is consumed by virtue signaling and social justice to the point where nothing else (even our business) seems to matter. More importantly, they seem oblivious to the fact that not everyone shares their woke sensibilities and they’ve said some highly divisive and offensive things. There is no vehicle for dissent. Thinking of leaving a firm I’ve dedicated my life to as a result. It’s a sad realization.

Hi everyone. Hope everyone is enjoying their audit/tax season. I’m going into my 4th year as an audit partner. Let’s say the firm is in the top 5-10 range. Comp is $365k (draw plus distributions). Haven’t had comp discussions this year, but historically, it’s been 50-60k increases YOY. I’m sure this is under Big 4 salary levels, but for any National accounting firm partners, wanted to get thoughts. Thanks!
