I think what’s most important is finding a mental health professional that you connect with and can trust and have an honest open relationship with
2 big differences between psychologist and psychiatrist is
1. Psychiatrist has an MD
2. Psychiatrist can prescribe medication
I have been a very anxious person since my childhood. I just recently decided it was time to get help and I was also unsure where to start looking. I called my primary physician and asked for a few recommendations and did my own research and read reviews to see what people thought. Have my first appointment tomorrow so hopefully all goes well. I think you have to expect a period of trial and error and finds who and what works best for you, so it may take some time to find a good one that’s right for you. Good luck with your search!! You are making great strides for your wellbeing :)
Also going to see a psychiatrist who will decide if medicine is the right option for me, and they will recommend a therapist (non-MD) for me as well. You definitely could see both!
I’d start with a Psychologist that you like and develop a connection with. Most Psychiatrists are quick to over prescribe medication and unless you truly believe you have a chemical imbalance that needs treatment is a drastic measure. There are plenty of resources to find Psych professionals, start with insurance provider to ID network providers and go from there.
100% agree. Try a psychologist (not social worker) first. It has been proven that many of the behavioral therapies cause the same positive changes in addressing chemical imbalances that drugs do.
Having been through a similar situation, psychiatrists can be hard to get a referral for and the wait times can be pretty long. I’d recommend finding a psychologist for therapy and going to your PCP for medication.
Psychiatrists usually focus on diagnosis and medications with very little time on therapy. You can start with a PCP on meds but if you have trouble finding one that works a psychiatrist may be better positioned to find the solution.
Psychologists focus more on therapy and can prescribe medications in certain states.
You may need both. I needed the psychiatrist to find meds that created space to keep my life from falling apart and to do the therapy work with my psychologist.
