How should I dress for a video interview with a tech company? All of their company pictures are people in company branded t shirts. How formal should I go? (Female)

I always dress formal for interviews even if the culture is casual. Speaking from a male perspective this would be sports coat, nice slacks, button down, and tie. I'm not sure what that translates to from a female perspective...

like

Business professional. You haven't been accepted into their culture yet, so treat them like any other company. Maybe not a full executive suit, but a button down will be fine and for tech that's business professional.

Branded company shirt, ofc. Shows dedication.

I don't typically go to fancy dress parties.

Dress shirt, suit jacket, pajama pants.

like

I disagree with the above about dressing formally. First, they probably won’t care. Second, even if they do it’s much more likely that it would count against you. Tech companies don’t want conforming business type folks who wear or do whatever just because that’s what you do. Like any company they want to see that you fit into their culture.
I’m not a woman so I can’t really help you with what that means for you specifically, but I really don’t think the answer is business formal or professional. If I were interviewing with them I would wear a nice sweater and dark slacks or jeans, and a sports jacket over that if I wanted to be a little more formal. Of course everyone needs to look put together and crisp.

like

Fair point though to clarify with HR

Tunic + Thick leggings + Low heel boots/flats

This variation was my uniform when I worked in Silicon Valley.

I would do nice blouse/sweater and no blazer. I feel awkward wearing a blazer when the interviewer is in a t shirt.

like

Agreed! Had a final round interview recently with a firm like this and wore a nice blouse and still was more dressed up than anyone I met with.

I’ve literally been in interviews where they’re wearing hoodies and tshirts. Beginning of covid, I used to wear a nice blouse with a blazer and jewelry. I’ve now toned down to ditch the blazer as it felt too formal, especially since I’m only interviewing with tech companies. Like my last interviewer told me, we are working from home so don’t feel the need to dress too formally.

like

So I had this problem last week, I ended up doing a navy blazer with a button up.... and the interviewer popped on in her sweatshirt and hair up! So it was VERY casual. In my subsequent interviews I went more casual, but like a cute sweater versus full on professional.

Y'all are stuck in decades ago, instant culture clash showing up to a Google interview (or similar cultures) in a full suit

like

Agreed! A nice sweater or dress shirt should do.. esp with interviewers in hoodies. You don’t want to look like a nerd

like

If wearing a blazer is going to determine my fit for candidacy, then the company has gotten hiring all wrong. I did not suggest interviewing in a hoodie, you are telling me a nice dress shirt or sweater will hamper my chances compared to me showing up in a blazer, that sounds ridiculous

I would say a nice sweater or top that doesn’t feel like a typical stuffy blouse. Natural makeup and maybe earrings but nothing crazy jewelry wise and hair pulled away from the face but not too “done” looking. I think there is way more to this than just your top choice.

like

I dinged someone for being way too casually dressed on an interview with me (looked like a hair salon smock). My colleagues said they would have done the same. He also had a TV on in the background (and visible on Zoom). I don’t consider someone being overdressed a negative, but no need to wear a full suit.

like

Dress like you were attending the interview in person

I wore a dark turtle neck with a fun yet not distracting pattern. Didn’t want to pop too much but also not seem too stuffy.

I wear a black turtle neck for all video calls

Rule of thumb for interviews is 1 level above the company dress code. So if they’re in T-shirt’s wear a nice sweater/ blouse as suggested above

I’m interviewing for a start up and the role sounds interesting. Usually for the “test” part of the interview I’ve had to analyze data. This company wants me to develop a growth strategy that outlines key initiatives for growth, different opportunities, experiments I’d run, KPIs, and working cross-functionally.

Is this a lot for an interview?

I’m a little afraid of doing all this work to then just have them take my ideas and not hire me.

I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. From that conversation, I saw instant red flags. Any thoughts?

Round or exact numbers on banners/LPs? I was curious about this since in negotiations for example or pricing it's better to have the exact number. But if you have a case study, for example, is it better to say "Client X increased their revenue to 1,000,000 ARR" instead of "Client X increased their revenue to 987,500 ARR" ? Anyone has seen any impact on conversion rates?

I had cleared the interview and after the HR discussion, I checked my application status and could see that its on hold state. The reason written is that we dont have any opening matching your expected compensation. I didn't know that for level 10, 13.2 LPA is the maximum they can offer. When I had discussion with the HR told my expectation as 14 LPA as fixed, she didn't negotiate then, just my profile on hold and no one is replying now. I am ready to negotiate now but how can I do that now?
