The good thing about governments is that they employee people. In house and firms that work for governments do employment law. I work at a private firm that represents public school districts in all sorts of employment issues.
I work for a locality and do primarily employment law. I advise on ADA, FMLA, and Title VII issues. I handle EEOC claims, unemployment benefits hearings, and employment discrimination law suits. My state also has a grievance process for government employees, so I represent the employer side in those. It’s a pretty robust practice that I enjoy.
To find these positions, search state and local government websites in the geographical area you want to work in.
Yes, there are tons! Federal government attorney practicing L&E here, so feel free to DM me with specific questions.
The agencies hiring the most L&E attorneys will likely be EEOC, NLRB, DOL, OSHA, MSHA, FELRB, NMB, and FMCS. Also every federal agency will have attorneys that defend it against various L&E claims from its employees/unions. These are usually based in each respective agency's Office of the Solicitor.
USAjobs.gov will be your friend in this search.
I worked in L&E at a Federal agency before going private. Most general counsel offices have an L&E department because government employees sue the agencies all the time. Search USA Jobs for “Labor & Employment Attorney.” You’ll find a lot.
EEOC or DOL? Not in government so I’m not sure how to apply, but I’d be searching there websites first
Where I live the state AG and the county attorney’s office both have labor bureaus. Private firms may do labor and employment work for smaller municipalities as well
A solicitor’s office probably has an L&E department for city employees and union contracts
Worked at the EEOC on the federal sector side during LS, so federal employees suing fed agency. The VA and Post Office would be the two agencies to look at if you want to defend EEO cases. They made up the bulk of the cases we saw.
My bad, I’m aware of private firms representing gov entities 😂 I meant like where you are employed by the gov and practicing L&E
Yeah, sorry I meant that you can do outside counsel government work or work for government entities (federal, state, and local). I see government jobs posted on our Texas State Bar job board for example. State agencies, universities, counties, and cities may have in house positions that focus on employment.
I’m the ethics and employment counsel for an educational entity in Texas. The state doesn’t recognize unions so no labor for me.
I’m pretty sure all state employment is posted on the Workforce Commission’s website as well as most political subdivisions, but if there is an agency, department, or other entity (i.e. university system, school district, state hospital system, etc.) that you want to work for, check their employment postings on their website as well.
Yes! I love the practice area diversity of my work! And I feel like generally I’m making a positive difference and that my clients are good people. But I’m getting to the point where in-house is looking better and better. Traveling all over the state for school board meetings is rough. Do you know of any openings in the Austin area?
HI! Do you mean the legal department of the government? Or private firms representing the govt?
