Going to be presenting TV/brand film scripts soon. I’ve done it a few times before, just want to hear everyone’s best tips for selling scripts.

Don’t be afraid to go all out. If there are voices, do them. If there’s a song, sing it. Try not to lose confidence if they aren’t reacting in the ways you envisioned. If you do everything you can to really bring them along for the emotional ride, you’ve done a great job.

Exactly this! Be confident and start with a brief set up about how the story relates to the ask /answers the business brief before diving into the story. Be confident and adjust your tone of voice as you read it. At the end I like to wrap it up by stating a favourite part aka a light rationale for your creative choices.

Ham it up. Act it out. Romance the descriptions. Be entertaining.

Everything above is spot on and the most important.

A few more tips:

It’s more a performance than a table read.

If you’re at the front of the room, don’t make your clients look at the back of your head by staring at the big screen and reading what’s on it. Face and engage your audience.

“Drive” your own presentation.
Whether it’s your laptop or you’re using a clicker, it’s your story and your pace.
Don’t break your flow by asking someone to go to the next slide or let them skip ahead before you’re ready.

Don’t rush through it - let it land.

Great advice

If you don’t have the confidence to commit to the script when you’re performing, they won’t have the confidence in the script. Your commitment is a proof point all its own.

like

100% to all of the above. Don’t just read it, show your enthusiasm for it and find ways to give it life and dimension

As a listener, if I’m hearing it for the first time, I love when just the VO is read again at the end so it lands. It can be tough to take it all in when you flip between scene descriptions and VO.

like

Sometimes for vo-driven scripts this works the other way too. Describe the general visual beginning, then read through the VO in its entirety, then go back to give a deeper dive into the descriptions. Depends on the script, but agree hearing a whole VO at once some time in the presentation is a great idea.

like

Very exciting! You’ve gotten great tips already, but I’ll add one.

Be very thoughtful with what is on screen while you present. Don’t put up a slide with the whole script on it, otherwise people read ahead. Put up one or more key visuals that get across the feeling of the script, but make sure all eyes are on you while you present. If there’s heavy voiceover, you could flash that up on screen after, and go through just the voiceover a second time (sometimes describing the action of the script disrupts the flow of the VO).

like

Just make sure you send me those boards when you sell it through

likefunny

Don’t present it as a technical script with loads of technical film language. We often write scripts this way, as if we’re detailing an edit. None of this is important when you’re selling a story and can water down the magic. Think of it as theatre. Stand up, make eye contact, be charming and present it like you’re telling the world’s most fascinating story. Good luck.

like

If there is no on screen dialogue, I like to describe all the visual actions first then say “so picturing all that, the VO/supers overtop would read…”

We were told that the probation period is a training period & not an elimination one. It was shocking as a few of those trainees were actually good.
