Starting as a legal receptionist, i personally think is better, because you start off slow and really learn the ins and outs. Getting your certification can help with legal jargon and a basis of laws but you dont learn your area. Most times paralegals are thrown into the deep end. Basically, no amount of schooling can actually prepare you in the real world. I started as a receptionist with no schooling and worked my way up. I decided to go for my certification and found that the schooling and my actual experience with my state and courts were different. Not everything applied or crossed over.
Thanks for the input! My market is heavily in demand of a certificate, especially in lieu of legal experience so I figured I might as well check the box. My school gave us a few different broad options for specialties, like corporate or criminal law emphasis etc.
I have a couple interviews with different law firms coming up, although the courthouse job is the shortest commute of everything so far (I could walk there, Lol) so I was curious about this potential as a first step in the legal field. Seems a bit unconventional and not as relevant as starting at a law firm

It really depends on the area of law you choose. Working as a courtroom clerk will give you inside knowledge of the court system which will be helpful in civil lit, family law and some others. Not to mention the exposure to attorneys and law firms. If you have interest in another type of law, the courtroom experience may not be as helpful. Nothing against working in a firm, but there are a lot opportunities out there besides a firm. Paralegals are also needed within the court system and working as a clerk could be the same stepping stone as a firm receptionist. Explore your options!
I agree 100% I am a transactional Para and wouldn’t gain anything from court exposure. If you are planning on being a litigation Para, I would def go on the interview.
