Interrupting Confirmation Bias in Decision Making
Call to Action: Confirmation bias is the human tendency to seek, interpret and remember information that confirms pre-existing beliefs. Because of evolutionary traits, confirmation bias is often an unavoidable part of how you make decisions. Take time this week to understand how confirmation bias works and how to make more rational decisions.
Understanding: Your brainâs primary goal is self-protection and this applies both physically and psychologically. When opposing facts challenge your identity, your brain perceives the psychological threat and protects you as if it was an actual physical threat. Confirmation bias affects you in 3 ways: (1) How you seek information, (2) How you interpret the information in front of you and (3) How you remember things. You can follow the 3 tips below to support more rational decision making:
Approach life with curiosity not conviction. When you walk into every interaction trying to prove yourself right, youâre going to succumb to confirmation bias.
Seek and understand disagreement. Understanding various viewpoints can help you refine your perspective.
Think about thinking. To fight back against cognitive biases, you need to evaluate your instinctive reactions.
