You need to be very careful when distilling homemade spirits; legalities aside, if you don’t take enough cut at the front end, you can go blind from the methanol. You also need to know when to stop taking distillation on the back end. All of this is learnable, just need to be careful.
Urban legend. You cannot go blind from anything that comes off the still. But it might taste awful if you don’t get the cuts right.
My suggestion would don't take what people say here too seriously. But really, build a still don't buy one. You can buy the stuff to make a quality one. remember you're using it to distill water and "essential oils"
Check out the “still it” YouTube channel. Not looking to distill myself but interesting and cool co tent to geek out about like cuts, stills, distillations, maturation etc all on a small scale.
Chemist and Lawyer here. If you are in the US, any amount of distilling of spirits is illegal and they crack down on it hard. If you buy a still, it is reported to the TTAB.
Second, if you are going to do it, do your research and know you'll throw away a lot in the name of safety without enough testing equipment. It isn't easy, I'd recommend making your own wine, beer or mead instead.
Is this the fancy way of saying your better off just leaving it to the experts….?
