Has anyone done any freelance for big brands like Nike, Facebook, or YouTube? Did you get the gig through referrals, you reaching out to them — or vice versa?

I recently had a student who complained that his professor did not use enough citations in his academic papers. I was wondering, are we still allowed to cite our own writings in our papers these days? Or is it just a thing of the past?
