So what though? You have to shed the mentality that your goal in life is making partners happy
Associates are a lot more fungible than you think.
Almost every firm I left didn’t take it well. And yet, here I am. Doing quite well lol so I’m with A1. Who cares.

If you're well-liked and respected, the reactions will probably run the gamut so best to be prepared for the full range. Some partners will genuinely be happy if it's an opportunity you're excited about and wish you well. Some will be pissed and ice you out immediately. Others will try to convince you to change your mind, perhaps even by badmouthing the place you're going (saying this from recent experience). As A2 said, everyone is ultimately replaceable, and it's only a matter of time before they move on.

This.
Frankly, any partner that treats you negatively is an idiot. At a firm, no matter how prestigious, you and any and all partners are the “hired help.” As an in-house lawyer, regardless if you have any power to steer work to or from a firm immediately, you will have the power at some point. So, a partner mistreating you on the way out could be shooting themselves in the foot. You could decide to never work with them in the future or, if you’re really devious, you could hire them one day and treat them the way they treated you.
Grats on the role. Are you staying in m&a or doing something else?
Yep. High performer that people thought would be partner track. Dipped for an in house role that gave me prestige and actual work life balance. Some folks very happy for me. Some partners pissed that they weren’t able to take credit for placing me at a client. Really ran the gamut in a way I was surprised by given how long I’d been there and how many relationships I’d built. But you stay in touch with the real ones and the rest can eff off.
