Has anyone noticed any bias when it comes to employing? I helped interview a few people for a role, and there was 1 clear winner that was perfect for the role with the right experience, but my boss decided to choose his friend who was not experienced enough. But he would not be training them, it’s me! I have been honest and said I don’t think he’s qualified enough etc but it’s got me nowhere!

It’s not what you know, but who you know. Sad and true at a lot of places. Whenever somebody comes in with no clue, I try and figure out who they knew because more times than not, that’s what got them the job.

It really is, and it would be one thing if the person kind of knew what they were doing, but they don’t. And it falls to the rest of us to get them along.

Yeah, bias in hiring is more common than people admit. A friend of mine was passed over for someone clearly less qualified just because they were close to the manager. It’s disheartening, but sadly not surprising anymore. Did he actually end up hiring her or the friend?

He ended up hiring his friend! I tried to see if there was a way we could employ them both but it was a clear no. Such a shame, we’ve missed out there

It's extremely common. Sadly, who you know tends to matter a lot more in this industry than what you know. It's unfair, but it's normal.

That kinda sad to hear to be honest! It should be purely about how good you are at the job, not who you know! That’s crazy

This is “merit” based hiring at its finest
