There's an old saying that people don't quit bad jobs, they quit bad managers. And there's a lot of truth to that, how you deal with your manager can be a huge part of the job. I never actually quit because of an incompetent manager, but I've known it to happen. A lot of companies just don't realize how much talent gets driven away by managers who can't handle their jobs.
I had a micro managing kid as a manager. He was also a tyrant punk. The turnover in the IT department was ridiculous. In a 5 year span there were 9 people who left and some didn’t make it a year. I hope to god someone in corporate realizes the problem isn’t the employees and shitcans his incompetent arse. HFCU
Ive done it. I quit my last role because my boss was clueless on how to manage. He wouldn't give feedback, had no vision and worse, would take credit for your work. Throw in his nepotism and bully-ish leadership style and it made me realize my mental health wasn't worth it.
One day, he went overboard in his ways of speaking to me, I mean, he went as far as to tell me that I should look for employment in other areas of the company or to leave completely. There was no growth and that I should accept my role as there will never be a promotion.
So I said a big FU, I'm done. Since I've quit, they're stock has plummeted from $120 p/share to $25. Good riddance to those toxic fuckers
As for BMO I think that this bank is a bit shady going through identify theift and they are making it very disturbing and difficult to get anything done. No resolution in sight.
I feel for you and hope that helps with the problem.
I've been on the other side of this as a lead instead of a manager. But the guy only FELT as if people were incompetent and trying to gaslight him. In reality, things didn't move very fast, the processes and priorities were hard to figure out, and ultimately the quality of all of our work suffered.
I spent many hours trying to convince him that he needed to try to see things from leadership perspective and not assume that people weren't always out to make us look bad (when they sometimes were, it was a multi-contractor environment and it's par for the course). He ended up doing something stupid out of frustration and got himself fired from the project.
I guess the moral of the story is: don't forget to try to have empathy for people you think are doing things wrong. You may not know the whole story, and some of the decisions they are making could be colored by emotions you have the luxury of not knowing. Counterpoint to that: Don't gaslight yourself that way either. draw appropriate boundaries and communicate them, if they are consistently crossed after that you have a situation to get out of.
I was gaslit, had an incompetent manager who couldn't get his team to perform and was putting all the pressure on me, he wasn't sure if we had to take tickets from queue, take calls or work on our own queues, lack of organisation went out of control, so I just quit. Not my issue anymore. No matter how good the pay was the manager was inept in running a team. And he was always ready to pounce trying to find flaws.
I joined big tech and was stressed to the point I couldn’t sleep because things weren’t great with my manager 2 months in. Had a bit of an intervention and we’ve been great ever since. My takeaway from that experience is that if I can’t find a path to a stable relationship with a boss I’m leaving within 3 months no ifs ands or buts about it.
We always quit managers not companies at the need of the day
Absolutely!
Yep - my current position, dropping CTO for Chief Architect role so I don't have to work with him anymore. It's that bad.
Isn’t that the only reason anyone ever quits? I have done it at least twice.
Yes
I did that in 2014. However, the gaslighting started before I left. Moving me to a location an hour away from home was the icing on the cake. I did see signs that this guy was more of a manager than someone with IT experience early.
When I was moved, I started getting high blood pressure due to the stress of the commute. After a point, I flat out resigned after being on FMLA.
Yes! This is the reason I left my most recent job.
I have quit for a variety of reasons one of which was having a really bad manager that didn't know how to manage people. Not everyone is cut out to be a manager, that is for sure. If you are having problems with your manager then start looking for something else.
Yes
I’m seriously considering it.
I just couldn't take it anymore. You'll make the decision that is right for you
Yes. More than once.
A while back, the place where I worked didn't give me an annual bonus. This was after being told to work on a proposal over Labor Day weekend. Said proposal had already been canned by our upper management, the Director never told us, thought we "needed the practice". I spent the next year looking for a new job, found one right before the bonus letters were to go out. The morning I broke the news to my Manager, I had to wait in line - another guy was also giving his 2 weeks notice! Later, the Director paid me a visit, wanted to make sure I was "doing the right thing". Explained to him that I would make enough additional salary in 2 months at the new job to match what I would have gotten in a bonus. So, lots of gaslighting at that company.
Totally with you on this! I walked away from a bonus as well. The gaslighting is just not worth it.
Couldnt, because I stayed for the greater good.
I haven't yet, but getting damn close. A job at Target seems better than the crap I am putting up with.
