Has anyone switched practice groups later in your career (as a mid/senior associate)? Or know people who did? What has your/their experience been like? I’m currently a 5th year restructuring associate feeling a bit pigeonholed but also worried that I’m too expensive to train.

Know of people (2+) who switched and currently am switching practice groups (lit ——> something corp) between 3rd and 5th YOE.ost importantly if you have certain exposure/experience relevant to the new practice group and can come up with a reasonable narrative why.

Are you willing to take a class cut to 2nd/3rd year?

like

I always say that as long as you’re willing to take whatever class year cut is needed to get you where you want to go, anything is possible. Recently we had a 5th year banking/finance associate retool to funds (came over as a 2nd year).

Just curious, is restructuring work interesting? I always imagine it to be a bit depressing since you only get involved when the business is struggling and you still take a fraction out of that business even tho it’s already not doing well?

Curious, what drew you to Rx?

I did a judicial externship with a bankruptcy judge and honestly (in hindsight) just really liked the people I worked with

How can I sell my 2 years of clerkship as valuable experience for corporate work? I would like to get credit for at least one year (at least in salary, if I can’t in seniority). I know for litigation they are more clearly valued and linked to that type of work, but I have reconsidered my interests and now am thinking of going into corp. However, I don’t want to feel like I wasted 2 years clerking (which I don’t feel like that, but I have to convince an employer of that too). Any help or insight?

Lateral that just went through first bonus season with the firm. Not in a major market but workload is comparable to major markets. Surprised at how low the bonus was. I received solid reviews and my annualized hours were well above the requirement. Should I approach anyone about this? Wondering if it is worth addressing or if it could compromise my standing. Thanks in advance!

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
