Senior AE here with just under 5 years in the industry. I’m looking to move out of selling and into a sales engineer role. My current OTE is 205k, 115k Base with 90k variable. I understand that I’ll be taking a bit of a pay cut moving into a sales engineer role. I just interviewed for a Senior Sales Engineer role and their offer is 140k base + 20% bonus ($28k) + some amount of company stock (company is pre-IPO). Does this sound in line with other companies?

How much should an L2 engineer with over 4 years of experience working for an MSP be making in NY metropolitan area? I am jack of all trades working on ESXi, Windows Servers, firewall, switches. I do have a couple of CompTIA certs. I am making somewhere around 90k and I feel I am underpaid. The recruiter came back saying they can only offer an SDE 1 position, and currently the team I interviewed for does not have any open positions at that level. In one hand, Consulting is great for the family, you can be home at hours others can't to be part of your kid's daily life (breakfast, school pick up, bath time, etc.) in the other hand, consulting is hard, when your home you are there, but often pulled away to do night work, presentations, and SOWs. Client work needs to get done (at the same time my son is my number one client) Any Dad's out there who have some good guiding principles they have found useful to strike the balance (knowing some days things are just not balanced)?

I know VP positions can vary with YOE but based off of our talk & looking at JD, this is a very senior position looking for 10 YOE min - I have 3 YOE. I didn’t say anything initially and just sent my resume. I now have a call with HM who’s an SVP. I would love the role - should I dance around YOE or be clear in that I’m junior and would be willing to take a lower level to still be considered during the call?
