Have any of you ever started a gig somewhere and been like, WTF did I just walk into 👀? Don’t get me wrong places have been typical ad agencies but somehow this gig I just started has like layers and layers of drama and shit that I feel like I was dropped into the middle of (stealing work, turf wars, passive aggressive snips on calls). Honestly have never wanted to run for the hills more. Really don’t know how to navigate, am trying to stay out of it but the partner I was given is deep in it.

Dissociate. In messy situations I have to remember they’re only paying me to concept and art direct.

If you can bring even a bit of order or a positive vibe to the mix, this might become a cash cow for you. Try to stay too blessed to be stressed, and lead however you can as a freelancer by example. Maybe this will even help you in life when it comes to honing your abilities to not let outside madness affect you internally. Here’s to hoping!

This! You want the chaos paycheck! And if you’re able to make sense of it, you have extra value. I’m on a gig with a chaotic unstated process. While it nearly burnt me out, my earnings were solid. BUT if you can’t tolerate it, leave but in these trying times, I’d rather work

like 99% of the time.

Nobody ever hires a freelancer because things are going well. Just cya and document everything.

Home office preference question. I am getting ready to redo the layout of my home office. One option I'm considering would have my desk facing a wall. I am wondering if anyone with this current setup has any feedback about it. I would face the wall so that I would have a better background for video conferences (am on about half the day) and also my cord situation would be cleaner.

Starting a new job next month, and considering taking two days off for kids’ spring break next month. Not sure whether it’s appropriate to request time off for a new job (I would’ve preferred not to take any time off for first three months). I may just be able to just ask for a single Friday off (so 1 day rather than 2 days).

Any thoughts on whether I should proceed with the request? I just came from big law and want to make sure I’m not making a bad impression on my colleagues.

Quick PSA: one of the perks of going in-house, is that you’re no longer at an ad agency and all that that entails.

Just started a new in-house tech fl gig and it’s giving me whiplash! Somehow this dept has brought every person/toxic behavior from their old agency just to a new environment. Nowhere is perfect but good god. I honestly think companies/HR could learn a lot about their depts from freelancers.

Friendly reminder folks- don’t work for Havas Health and You. They cut the freelancers hourly rates, again and made it so there’s no OT. The resource manager at HOV said if I couldn’t swing $80 an hour as an HCP copywriter, she’d have to find someone else. Good luck 👍🏻
