While the hours on DDs are tough, they are some of the least stimulating, most rote studies you can do. Once you do a few, it’s just running a playbook and answering the same type of questions for different clients / sectors / deal contexts.
I would much rather do more stimulating and complex strategy work or work where we actually build something with the client that they’ll use.
Couldn’t agree more
I love doing dds when I’m sad because no time to think about my life
It’s rare that I would describe any senior member of my firm who is focused on DDs as “thriving”. They may look put together but the lack of sleep / stress / lack of wlb are all definitely there. I know corporate strategy isn’t a walk in the park but it beats the hell out of 3 week sprints
I find DDs interesting and more stimulating than lots of politics & meetings in other cases. But that said, unless you want to do PE, more DDs wont help your exit prospects
If you compare yourselves to the small % of people who thrive in a DD setting, that may not be good for your long term well being. DDs certainly help you develop consulting skills faster but there are so many things you can learn from GP cases which you may not get from a DD case. (Plus skills that are more relevant if you’re planning to exit)
I love the DD world. I focus on technology and custom software architecture. Where else do I get to see on a weekly basis the technology behind products I use and get the rights to call it utter garbage. I've had some of the most stimulating conversations with Targets and if they are boring I just wait a week. The good ones you get to pitch post close work to and decide to lead on of those engagements.
Btw, for the OP - the DD world is much more fun outside of covid when you get to do quick turn travel seeing the world 48 hours at a time. Zoom times does make the job a bit of a drag. Also, the last 6 months have been brutal in volume to make up for lost time. Not sure about your firm, but we did 10% more deals in 2020 than 2019 and that's with only 7 months to do it in.
