Honestly, I think most “authentic” experiences marketed to tourists are borderline traps. I once paid for a village visit abroad that felt like a staged performance. Now, I trust word-of-mouth recommendations over flashy ads or brochures. A big red flag is when they can’t answer detailed questions about what’s included—if they’re vague, it’s usually a bad sign.
Yes! I fell for a “hidden gem” guided tour in Rome that was more of a walk down the same streets I’d already explored on my own—for triple the price of a self-guided app. I’ve learned to stick with recommendations from locals or well-reviewed options on travel forums. If the experience is heavily marketed near tourist hotspots or includes vague promises, I usually skip it.
By changing your mindset from tourist to traveler, you can avoid many tourist scams and excuses to throw your money away. Establish goals for why you are traveling and understand where you are going and what it offered. Most places have broadly advertised culture, history, food, and attractions but not everything is worth the expense and is a “must” see. Invest your time and money in activities that have meaning to you are you will feel better when parting with your money and time.
