Yes! It was not my choice the owner discovered this girls resume on our printer proving she was job hunting on the clock. She was a nice girl but wrong for the role but I felt awful firing her because I knew she would struggle to find a new job. I did my best to remain calm while firing her but did cry a little in the bathroom once she left the building.
I have not fired someone but I have seen bosses giving PIP. Yelling at them at weekly meetings and ultimately after 1 year or so they are fired from the office
Yes. First time was difficult but then it was the best for her as she landed a new job that met her skills much better, she just wouldn’t have done it on her own. Since then, it has become much easier (probably have done it 6-8 times in my career).
I had to fire a new hire that wasn’t working out. It was my first time. I didn’t sleep for days and threw up afterwards. It was awful, but I learned a lot about myself and the mistakes I made in the hiring process and how i chose the wrong candidate. While saying next time was “easier” and got easier each time seems callous, it was because I was a better leader by then and knew that I had given someone every opportunity to improve and they didn’t take advantage of the help being offered. It’s never “easy” to fire someone, but it becomes less difficult the more you do it and can recognize how you’re doing the poor performer a favor by helping them move on to other situations in which they may be more successful and better align to their abilities efforts.
I have had to do it and honestly at the end of the day I had to remind myself that we all have a job to do and part of mine is hiring and firing. When people aren't getting done what they need to get done and things are slipping through the cracks, sometimes people have to go.
There comes a time in every person's life when they arrive at a Crossroads. No matter the choice of direction, the consequences or acclaim is the sole responsibility of the employee. If they get fired, well life hits hard sometimes and they will need to persevere and grow. When o e door closes, God opens a window. Integrity will prevail. Don't feel too negative about doing your best job for your company, it's your value and what you get paid for. People outgrow a position or no longer aspire to be at their best every day. Help them by pushing that person out of a bad fit and into a better fit. It's the sole reason for management's existence. We champion the process of making our company and our employees better and sometimes it means parting ways.
Be your best ! Michael
No, firing someone is never easy, and if it is, I don't want to work for you!
It’s easy for me when it’s pragmatic and ethical.
I was once involved in an unethical termination which was simply someone didn’t like someone’s vibe. I left the company shortly after that.
It's never easy terminating someone, but unfortunately you have to do that sometimes. It is part of the job as being a manager, especially a general manager. You're basically protecting your work environment and your employees if that person is not adhering to company policies or procedures and have been coached on them several times. Most important thing is to always have a paper trail that you , documentation of the discussions you had with them about the problem. And most important, make sure you both sign it and it's dated.
Did you ever feel the rain…?
I have had to fire a lot of people in my time, although it is not easy don't make it personal. If you have given them all the tools to be successful and have done everything you can to help them it is then on them. My saying is "I don't fire people they fire themselves "
