Attractiveness bias is deeply ingrained and hard to dismantle, but awareness is a start. As managers, we have a responsibility to recognize it and make sure we’re evaluating performance—not polish—when it comes to growth and visibility.
The people that put more effort into their looks, is an important part of this. Presenting yourself professionally has and will always matter in the world. It can be a fine line, but I do think mostly if you are at least looking the part from your own doing, you’ll be fine. There are a lot of factors for getting ahead in the workplace.
Pretty privilege is real, and pretending it doesn’t exist just protects the system. If you’re tall, slim, stylish, and symmetrical, you’ve already got a head start—and it’s time we talk about that bias out loud.
Oftentimes some male leadership is simping, so you have to be careful.
