Have you ever used shadowing as a way to get more money in your job? Learning other departments to either get higher pay there or use it as leverage to show your commitment?

I don't really think you can reasonably learn other skills just by shadowing. A shadow is more of a survey, not a way to reliably build up a bigger skill set. I have shadowed, but I really didn't learn much beyond the basics.

Yeah I guess you actually have to get you hands stuck into it for the most part.

It doesn't really work like that unfortunately. Spending a day watching someone else work doesn't make you qualified to do their job. And you're kidding yourself if you think employers will A) see this as a sign of commitment and/or B) think your commitment means you're worth paying more.

Almost anything makes a company trust you less by the sounds of it.

I have. Mainly to get more experience.

Yeah I think experience alone can be a good idea.

I just got laid off from my job as a gov contractor because the project I was working on ended. I’m currently a grad student part time and was hoping to work that job until finishing grad school before applying to consulting roles. Should I go ahead and try applying for those roles now since I don’t have a job? Or should I wait since I’m still in school until next May?

Any women here with lean PCOS? I do not ovulate on my own (metformin regulated my periods but I still don’t ovulate) and am moving from three cycles of Clomid/IUI to IVF soon. No other issues have been found other than my PCOS (HSG shows tubes open). Curious about your experiences. And the reason I mentioned lean PCOS is because it seems for others with PCOS part of the fertility path is diet/exercise/weight loss but I am already very tiny.

Thoughts on buying pre-construction homes in markets that are popping and flipping selling them when construction is complete?

My uncle does this (he’s a realtor) and usually gets 2-3x return. Obviously there is huge risk because property prices can change a lot in 1-2 years, but at the same time the upside is hard to ignore.

Anyway I protect myself against the downside risk? (other than loosing my down payment)

New to FishBowl but hoping to get some advice/make some connections on here. I have an MHA and 6 YOE post grad-school in hospital operations and leadership. I'm currently a Service Line Director looking to make a transition away from hospital operations into consulting/strategy/etc.

I’ve applied to a number of positions at Optum/PwC/CVS etc but can’t seem to get an interview. I’m revamping my resume but are there other things I can be doing to at least get an initial interview? Any advice?

Im currently going through industry change.
Im a pastry cook with 4yrs experience and the average salary start for this position is now at $22/hr here in vegas, especially in the strip. But cooking/baking is not my passion. So im changing into veterinary medicine and im seeing that the starting rate for a vet tech is around $16-18. Why is that?? Why are people in the vet med industry being paid so low?? Something needs to change. Labor of love aint enough for the people in this job.

Hey fishes, recently got an offer of 245k plus a bonus, but no specificity and at least 3% cost of living annual raise. My current job I make 150k plus a 20% bonus and an annual cost of living raise anywhere from 2-3.5%. Have been in my current position about a year. Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?

I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!
