Having a son (first) next year and looking for a birth year watch to hand down. Obvious thought would be a sub but open to other ideas - ideally want something that is classic and will keep its value. Would wear myself. Would rather have my name (or his) on the registration if possible. Any tips/ideas? Is it impossible to get a new sub in a year’s time?

Speedmaster Professional would be my pick. Huge nerd here 🤓 And I would love a watch that could inspire my own kid to reach for the stars.

this is a very good selling point

If I was the kid, I’d rather have a modern sub than a birth year. So my advice is to get on the list and take it whenever it becomes available. Hopefully you’ll have it for his college graduation or whenever you intend to make the gift.

Patek. But you don’t actually own it...

Lol this is a good point. Budget would top out at 15 but would prefer around the 10k mark

Daily wear (only watch I own) is a Dornbluth 99.1 (42mm) if that helps. I’d considered a Speedmaster and think it’s a good fallback option.

Would I have a shot at any Rolex stainless in a year timeframe? I think it’s an itch that I want to scratch but don’t really want to go gray - if I’m handing it down 18 years from now it’d be cool to have my name or his on the papers (maybe that’s dumb).

Unless you have a relationship with an AD, or get super lucky, seems to be nearly impossible. But I like the idea!

Bought a moon watch variation (First Omega in Space) and while not limited, its unique in a way so that was a motivating factor. Can wear it until he’s “ready”...

So many great options but trust that he will love anything that reminds him of you...this was also for my first born (and only).

Doable. You would need someone to introduce you to your local AD. I was referred to a dealer and got one in 3 months. Granted that was before the new model came out. You can always go grey and hopefully prices fall by then.

Other options: omega is a good option both speedmaster and seamaster have lots of good history

like

Speedmaster Moonwatch. History is arguably richer than a run of the mill Sub. And these days with the Rolex craze it’s certainly more special

You should be able to get either a NOS or gently used ALS Saxonia Thin. The piece below was 12k USD on Chrono24. As timeless as it can get :-)

You might even be able to negotiate a few % off with the AD for a new one.

Agree. The ALS is awesome, but probably a better present for 25th birthday or wedding etc

Not going to be birth year, right? Unless they keep making it into next year

I’m a junior and I have the opportunity to join the employment and benefits group as a specialist. The alternative is VC/M&A.

I’m under the impression that joining the EB group will still give me decent exit ops, has more manageable workflow (less unexpected dumpster fires like in deal-work), and a somewhat better WLB because of my previous point.

Any disagreement/any other things I should consider before deciding?

Rubber strap Qs fellow 🐠. Looking for a black rubber strap for the GMT BLNR that integrates with the case. Two questions:
1) seems like it comes down to Everest, rubber B, and maybe Zealande. Anyone have an opinion from experience?
2) tang buckle option or the one that uses the Rolex clasp? like the look of the latter, but wonder if I could use the strap with other pieces with the tang (unless these are truly ‘custom fit’ to the Rolex model selected?)
Thanks all!
