As someone without a degree, and switched careers into Data, I will preface anything I say that you need to have a good understanding of the extremely difficult task ahead of you. This is not something that is easily achieved due to the over-saturation of the market, highly skilled and educated people in this field, and the biases that exist for education. All that said I’ll give you an idea of a possible path that you can attempt, and hopefully things will work out for the best.
Knowing I wanted out of my old job as an adjuster, and I have been learning coding off and on since I was a teenager, I picked up a subscription to datacamp.com. They have multiple data related pathways with courses and certifications. I’ll say that certifications don’t really hold any value or weight when applying for a job, but it gives you an established goal to work towards. On that site they have a data analyst professional pathway with something like 28+ courses that are shorter form videos (usually 5ish minutes) and then hands on learning to apply the concepts. They also have personal projects you can build and have a way to build a portfolio to present what you’ve learned and that you have the skills capable of completing this type of work. I used this site for 2+ years to learn about multiple different things related to data, and complete my analyst pathway in both SQL and python, then kept adding additional skills as well. They usually offer discounts through the year for 50% off their membership, and I think they’re running a deal right now for it.
Knowing I didn’t have the education to compete against many who have bachelors and even masters degrees in quantitative fields of study, I took the route of applying for jobs internally at my company. Most companies are more willing to hire internally, and many offer options to overlook certain education requirements because you’re already employed and a “cultural fit” at the company. Some companies offer internal boot camps or training to career switch into something like data analysis or IT. I know Progressive Insurance has just that, which others in my company have followed. I would look at what resources are available at your company, and if there aren’t any, or you don’t see your company y as one that offers these opportunities, then consider applying to companies that would provide these options. Internal hiring into a DA role will be your strongest option. I hope all works out for you, and best of luck!
