Hi everyone! I currently work in an outpatient setting doing individual therapy but am planning to leave my job. I have a handful of patients, some of which have been meeting with me consistently for over 2 years, that I suspect will want to remain in touch after I leave. Has anyone ever done this before? If so, what did it look like for you and the patient? Or do you advise against it and if so why? I’ve been researching this and can understand both sides of the argument. Thanks in advance!

Yes! I’m careful about reading the non compete carefully but have picked up several as clients. A few have remained personal friends. I’m in speech therapy though, for kids, so it’s a little different. I’m a big believer that boundaries are defined by each individual not some blanket policy. And boundaries can be different for each client. I always have the discussion openly with them about what we both prefer and need the relationship to look like. That way it’s all transparent and clear. Mutually communicated boundaries :-)

Awesome! That’s up to the both of you, then. Do each of you WANT the same thing? If you both do then definitely have the chat about boundaries and pros/cons, risks & benefits of remaining as friends. If ONE of you is not comfortable with that then say you have a boundary that needs to stay professional. You don’t have to give any other reason if you don’t want to. Same rules as any other human :-)

Hello! I was offered a position at the middle of the posted salary range. I exceed every one of the requirements and all but one of the preferred qualifications. (I will have my Supervision designation in a few months.) Should I negotiate a higher salary now or when I obtain my new license? Would it be appropriate to accept the current salary under the terms that I receive an increase once I get that increased licensure status? Thank you!

Hi, I am considering making an appointment with a therapist to discuss mental health, and my question is this: how do you know that your case is severe enough to warrant a therapist’s time? I am thinking about moving into private practice. I am three years out of graduate school ( I went to school for clincial mental health counseling). I am currently living in NYC and my current group practice is paying me much lower (as well as treating me poorly/ burning out) than I think I could be getting if I started my own practice. Any tips on where to begin? Any programs you would suggest regarding the business side of a private practice? Thank you!
