No benefit to stay at a Disney hotel in CA- save your money
I do think staying at the universal ones give you perks
Can DM me for longer thoughts, but would recommend staying in LA (Beverly Hills, West Hollywood or even Santa Monica) for the Universal part and the relocating to Orange County (Newport or Laguna) for Disney/Legoland
Sorry — just saw you’re doing the trip in reverse, but would still recommend two different stops. And not staying too close to universal
Stay at Disney's hotel californian.. its soooo worth it for mid-day napping
But the drive from universal to Disney could be bad. I am not really inclined to stay at a hotel in Disney or universal , just somewhere in between .
The challenge is traffic between the two is not great. Maybe choose downtown LA but again traffic can be bad depending on time of day. I would say stay at an off property hotel close to Disneyland, some have shuttle service like the Hyatt to the park. Then stay at Sheraton or Hilton at universal (since both are walking distance and have a tram to the park).
San Gabriel. About in the middle for both. I like staying here when I am in LA. Pasadena could work too.
Depending on how long you’re there I would definitely stay at one of the hotels near the park for Disney - many different options that aren’t actually Disney but give you easy flexibility if you wanted to go back to the hotel for any time during the day.
Similar thoughts for Universal - we stayed at the Sheraton, but really only needed one day to see everything.
If you’ve got to choose a single spot, choose Irvine, Tustin, or Mission Viejo. Nice area, safe (especially Irvine), and not too expensive. Easy to get to both; just an hour north and south to either.
