Really focus on the transferable skills between the two roles. Did requirements at one job show that you can lead? Are a self-starter? Communication skills? Highlight all of that.
They definitely had some similarities in leadership, management and even mentorship. But if I'm being completely honest...something happened in my life to where I didn't carry the job well like I would usually do. I was trying to give it my all, but definitely dealing with some things, that cause me not to be as present. And I do think my values didn't match with the jobs values but I saw myself so low that I stayed. I believe the company took advantage of that...It could've been various factors too, but I think that my concern moving forward is having the same confidence I had before.
And at the same time, although I'm looking for jobs back in my field, I also just simply need a job and be consistent enough to meet the goal of establishing security for myself. So is the desire to pursue my career goal also something that I should come back to??
Thank you for your initial response. Sorry it took me a while to get back to you.
When I switched from sales to teaching, I explained my transition thoroughly in my cover letter, outlining why I was making a complete change in industries. Without this, I imagine I would've been passed over because why is this saleswoman applying to be an educator? Explaining your shift is really important.
Hey Nebraska lol,
I commend you for making that transition, I support it 100% and even congratulate you for being able to convey that in order to make the shift.
For me, I think it's a little different. I don't think it was a career shift. I think it was that my resume has been mostly consistent by happenstance without me even knowing the sure direction I wanted to take. Then I went from teaching positions...to Royal Farms...now trying to get back into teaching positions. I am more clear about where I want to go now. I just think it's a matter of me regaining that confidence to teach and go after it. But in your response, and the other response I've seen, it is something that can be thoroughly (but tactfully) explained in a cover letter, and I'll just have to be honest.
I appreciate the feedback. Thank you!!
In looking to rejoin jobs in you desired career field, how do you explain a change to a job that has nothing to do with those listed on your resume? And I guess the reason why I am asking is because at this age (in 30s), it seems like it makes all the difference vs, when you were younger or fresh out of college. And when looking for new positions, they may speculate why you chose a position that seems less beneficial than where you were.
