Hello Fellow Accountants,

I'm trying to start an accounting and I.T. firm with a good friend of mine. We both have about 5 years of experience in our field. Wanted some advice on our we should do about it. What challenges we could potentially face? What will be the best method to reach out to customers? I'm willing to hear some good feedbacks. Thank you

Don’t take any client just because you’re new to starting a practice and need revenues. Focus on getting clients that you’re qualified to serve, that pay your fees at high realization, and that want to do things correctly.

Biggest tip is develop a system to track and follow up on leads. You will need to have some discipline in sales to keep the business growing.

Thank you for the tip

So cool, starting a firm sounds exciting! Biggest challenges? Probably building trust as a new firm and managing cash flow early on. For clients, start with your network, LinkedIn, and maybe small biz groups?? If I were you I'd probably offer free consults to show your value. What niche are you focusing on?

Are you hiring a remote Accountant? If so im your girl, I have 30 years experience in all aspects of Accounting, especially QBO.

Have good system to track tasks. It is easy when you have few clients but it will be a nightmare after it is not done correctly.

Awesome…. Congratulations

If you’ll be hiring I’d love to chat with you. Been in public accounting and now corporate finance for 30+ years.

We are not looking to hire anyone at the moment, because we are just getting started. You have a great amount of experience. Once the company grows we will definitely be looking for talent.

Looking for more partners or just two of you?

I suggest becoming an expert on tax for Investors and Crypto investors. Options, etc.

Avoid unprofitable work.

Get all your clients to convert to the top 4 or 5 softwares, preferably quickbooks. Develop a specialty and market it. What state are you in? Best of luck. I'm sure you will succeed.

I'm in Texas

Need some feedback! So I was forced to move jobs about 6 months ago due to reorg and the new leader opting to bring their existing EA with them, without even meeting me. If stayed at the company but accepted an offer for a job outside of the department I was in. I’ve now been asked by a manager from my old department to apply for a job they’re opening that would be a 2 step promotion. She thought she got my managers permission to approach me (see comments)

Estimated tax payment question:
I converted $30k of rollover 401k into a Roth IRA and have $26k of realized ST Capital Gains this year (Roth conversion in end of Q1 and most capital gains in Q2).
My total federal withholding tax last year was approximately $12k and this year I will have 40% more in reported income on my employer W2 and anticipate higher that $12k federal withholding for my new job. Given this, what is the best way to go about making est. tax payments for the income (continued.)

Are private companies easier to work at than public companies in accounting? We have such an accelerated close deadline at the publicly traded company I’m at now, I really hate the inflexible tight deadlines and analysis seems to drag on forever after that. We also close AP/AR very early in the month yet that doesn’t stop payments/receipts from happening so we’re constantly adjusting our accruals until the end of month. Do private companies start their close after the month actually ends?

Advice needed - boyfriend has almost 3.5 years of finance experience at a bank. Interviewed for PwC valuation senior associate and now recruiter says they want to hire him at “experienced associate” because he has no valuation experience. If he does accept Associate, is it reasonable to ask for written, definitive timeline (1 year?) for promo to Senior upon meeting standards? Help!

Anyone from EY-Parthenon, what does a typical senior consultant look like resume/experience wise? If I have audit and FDD experience as a Senior for 3 years (currently in FDD), a CPA, no MBA, is that enough to get in to EY-P? Or is the MBA basically required? What would I be missing? Thanks!
