I think it's a great idea! A certification in coding and billing can definitely make you stand out against other candidates, especially if you're looking to grow in the medical admin field. Hiring agents do look for certifications, as they show you're committed to the role and have up-to-date skills. Definitely worth the investment in my opinion
In general, certifications can absolutely be a good thing! I would say though it does depend a lot on what specifically you’ll be looking for and just what that company or hiring manager is looking for. I’ve been looking at some certs myself and the out of pocket costs really have me weighing my options!
Certifications won't guarantee you access to a better job, but they will help. First of all, they certify that you learned things. So that speaks well of you, it means you're not just treading water at your job. What you have to learn along the way will make you better prepared in interviews, which is an advantage which is easy to overlook. And depending on the positions you apply for, the certs may be quite meaningful. If you can afford them, they're worth getting.
To know for sure: look at various job postings in your preferred geography to get an idea of what requirements are and if you see medical billing coding jobs, compare them to medical administrative jobs to see the differential. Also, use the Use the Wage Data by Occupation from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to gauge the pay is at least higher than then the median wage for the geographical area. Go to BLS.gov > Subjects > Pay & Benefits > Wage Data by Occupation > OESW Data Tables. Go through all of the latest available data (May 2023) and use the CPI calculator like one (https://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm) and a few others to adjust for inflation to get a realistic market numbers. Then cross-check with online job postings at competitor firms to get a real sense of what you should be making market-wise.
