Depends what kind of adventures you want really…. They’re both big cities with everything that comes with that - it just comes down to how hard you have to work to access what suits your lifestyle.
Very broadly, Sydney has more/easier access to beach, water activities, outdoorsy stuff, fancy restaurants and wine bars. Melbourne has more/easier access to artsy/creative culture, non-water sports, diversity of venues and nightlife.
(Also Sydney vs Melbourne is a real rivalry - so asking in the Sydney bowl probably means you’ll get a lot more pro-Sydney 😅)
It’s sort of like asking what is the better car, a KIA or a Porsche. One of the two is clearly the better option, and thus comes at a price premium. Whether it is worth the premium depends on your economy and how much you value beaches and outdoor life.
It’s hard to say without knowing more about your interests and desires in a city.
People often say Sydney has a similar vibe to California and Melbourne to NY. It’s not a great comparison but it gives you something to base your thinking off of.
Cost of living in Sydney is definitely higher than Melbourne, but Australia is an expensive country overall.

I've never heard anyone say this before? I think it's the other way around! I'm Sydney born and raised and nowhere has felt more naturally like home to me when travelling than NYC. To compare Sydney and LA is a travesty!
I’ve lived both. If you can afford it, the lifestyle in Sydney is far better. But it ain’t cheap.. I pay 5200 per month in rent and spend a crazy amount .. but it’s a lot of fun
Definitely not 🤣
But it is nice

It really comes down to where you can afford afford live in both cities and how that compares to your lifestyle goals. Figure out your housing budget (renting or buying) and check out domain.com.au or realestate.com.au to see what you can afford. In Sydney you generally trade off house/apartment size for commute time. If you want to live near the beach it will cost you more.
Give us an idea of what your ideal living location is (nearby activities, commute times, family size and therefore desired house size) and we can suggest some areas in Sydney for you to look at.
What are your interests? Do you enjoy music or culture? Are you a fan of the water? Lol
It’s two different cities so depends what you’re after. If you love sports, culture, relax peace and don’t mind 4 seasons in a day weather then Melbourne. On the other hand if you love going to the beaches, fast peace and don’t mind extra cost of living then Sydney. Our family initially arrived in Australia and living in Melbourne but we can’t stand the cold in Winter so we relocated to Sydney and not looking back ever since. However we love to travel to Melbourne for holidays when we get a chance.
Melbourne is a brunette and Sydney is a blonde. https://youtu.be/ea14oVK8XLw
Tale of two cities. Sydney is fast pace, glamour. Melbourne Classic and AFL crazy!
You can easily move cities between the two; why not try both?
I started living in Sydney then moved to Melbourne, not because I got bored of Sydney, but because I wanted a change and could transfer with work.
Rent is cheaper in Melbourne but rents everywhere are going up and the rental market is competitive.
In my opinion also, Victoria being a smaller state allows easier travel for weekend trips to regional parts of the state which I love.
Both have snow, both have beaches, both have mountains and both have a nightlife (you just have to be in the know to do Sydneys properly, it’s easier to stumble upon Melbournes scene)
Sydney is more humid than Melbourne, which usually cools off in the evenings (even in the height of summer).
