UX design involves wearing a lot of hats and having multiple skill sets alongside basic design knowledge. It keeps you on your toes, especially if you don't work in-house for a single company. So, in my experience, I need to know a lot about marketing, design, technology, and even some psychology behind the marketing. Overall I love what I do and want to keep on this path for a while, so if you're interested, there are lots of degree programs and certifications, but you don't always need those to get a UX design job.
I think you're getting some great insight from D1 there. I would also add that a lot of UX design is understanding human behavior, researching and being able to implement that within the design.
Had a friend in grad school whose day job was as a UX designer. He was very multi-talented. Great at tech, but also killer at design, writing, etc.
