They value me but they’re not Google or Facebook, they’re an early stage series A startup who had to lay off people last month.
I’m in NY and we have unlimited vacation.
- What do you think I should expect?
- is the law is 4 months leave? But you negotiate if you’re paid or not?
- Is 2 months full paid too much to ask? Should I be happy if they give me that?
I think this is what I want: 2 months full paid and part time 3rd month.
(For context, I love this job and don’t think I can stay away for 4 months completely checked out - another story though :))
I was in similar situation. Suggest:
1. If you can ask anyone else who went on maternity leave (assumes you’re not the company’s first) - find out what they did.
2. Research your legal rights, based on your state and # of employees at company. FMLA, Short Term Disability, etc.
3. Browse company’s policy books if available (haha they probably don’t have one)
4. Negotiating paid leave likely has minimal flexibility, but work from home may have flex. Push for flexible return from work (2 days per week in office, shorter hours, etc). Whatever you think would help you transition. It’ll make a big difference and is the type of thing they can negotiate on a case-by-case basis (whereas paid maternity leave would be more company-wide).
Lastly, get everything in writing. This also burned me in the past. Good luck!!
Ny law is something like 12 weeks paid leave in 2021 but it might not be at your full salary? And there are requirements regarding how long you’ve been employed. I would definitely ask for more than the legal requirement. I feel like 3 months is pretty standard. Also better to ask for more and then change your mind later in terms of part time and all that. So I agree ☝️ ask for 4 months paid.
