Are you a senior partner by any chance?
The BBC did a great documentary on Jim Clark. Highly recommend checking it out if you’re interested
Your list is fine, only mistake is Max Verstappen should be nr1 since he is the GOAT.
Found our first DTS fair weather fan
Honorable mention: Stirling Moss
Jochen Rindt ?
Alain Prost (missed being 9X WDC by something crazy like less than 10 points)
Why just Champions ?
Sterling Moss as a non WDC
Gilles Villeneuve
Agree that trying to rank is way too subjective.
The thing with Gilles is that those around him (Prost and Hunt and Sheckter) all said he was the best and fastest driver they ever raced against. That's why I mention him.
Totally slipped on Alonso also. He's a monster. Loved when he first came up with Minardi (was always a Minardi fan)
Alonso?
Without a framework on you you ranked them for us to opine one, this list is 🗑️
See below for a detailed list and breakdown
Because of PwC 1’s asinine comment, let me edit this list with more details.
1. Juan Manuel Fangio x5
Because he won with multiple constructors in a era of innovation and death surrounding him and others. First 5 time WDC
2. Jim Clark x3
Because as a humble sheep farmer he came up through club racing and was found by Colin Chapman. He diverse skill set allowed him to race and win in all forms of 4 wheeled motor sport. Had he not been killed at Hockenheim he surely would have won more championships. He is still held in high regards by drivers today. Until recently held the grand slam record.
3. Ayrton Senna x3
He won three titles during the time of the Prost domination of both driver and politics in the FIA. He drove each car on the absolute limit and carried the turbo boost throughout the corner. Had he not died at Imola, 1995 and 1996 may very well look very different.
4. Jack Brabham x3
While not the biggest name on the list. I put him on here because not only did he drive the car, he designed the cars he drove. To my knowledge, he is the only driver to win the WDC in a car of his own design.
5. Jackie Stewart x3
Like Jim Clark, Jack Brabham, Phil Hill and many others he raced is a era surrounded by death. As a primary school drop out, he worked his way up while working in a garage in Scotland. After being surrounded by death and seeing the death of his mentee François Cevert he retired and fought hard for increased safety in motorsport. Something he continues to this day.
6. Niki Lauda x3
Like Fangio, he won the title with multiple constructors. He was the first man to stand up to Ferrari and tell him, “his car was shit”. His ability to come back from the brink of death is win two more championships is incredible.
7. Michael Schumacher x7
He won his first two titles in a under powered and underfunded team. Brought Ferrari out of the drought it was in and built it back into a powerhouse of a team. First 7 times WDC
8. Mika Häkkinen x2
Has been described by Schumacher as “the only man he ever feared”. His pure ruthless to go for the overtake to get past “the Michael” to beat the power house of Ferrari is something to be admired.
9. Lewis Hamilton x7 (still active)
Like men higher on the list as well as most men on the list, he has worked hard (an understatement) to get where he is today. His rookie season, he was up against the 2 times WDC Alonso. His skill in the wet is only comparable to maybe Senna (see British GP 2008). In my opinion, he has really only won with one constructor. As he has always been attached to Mercedes in some regards, and in 08 McLaren was the works team.
10. Nigel Mansell x1
This is a man who started as a mechanic under Collin Chapman at Lotus to get into Formula 1. In order to pay for his first ride with Lotus, he took out another mortgage on his house. Through sheer grit and determination he was always the bridesmaid and never the bride until 1992. He is the only driver to have won both the F1 Championship and the CART Championship at the same time.
Honorable mentions
*Sir Sterling Moss - the gentleman racer
*Dan Gurney - inventor of the Gurney flap
You forgot to add Vettel and Goatifi
