Not sure what time your flights are but we just flew to Europe and back from NYC and we tired out our 23 mth old as much as possible and she mostly slept on the plane!

We did this but had a bottle with water ready for them to sip while take off and landing to balance the air pressure in their ears.
Bottles for take off and landing are good. I would suggest purchasing a seat for the kid rather than having them in your lap. I take the car seat on the plane and that really helped with them sleeping. Try to book the flight around a nap time if it's a possibility.
This. Flew once without a seat and had a terrible time. Always got seats after that and it is very smooth.
Thanks for the tips guys!
Took our 21 month old boy to Cancun this May from NYC, worst flight experience ever since we didn’t get him a seat, wouldn’t stay still for a min on our laps. Got him his own seat three months after for the trip to Orlando, much better! Also, you can buy a JetKid so you son can lie down
Business class was empty on our flight, so we took her off our laps and into her own seat, but she wouldn’t stay in her own seat. I think a lot might depend on how the kid is feeling!

2nd for purchasing a seat and putting the little guy in a car seat. 👍
See if you can switch to the non stop out of ewr. I think it leaves around 6pm and it’s a widebody. Don’t stop with little kids. You can hang out a bit in the plane and then have the kid pass out and hopefully stay asleep through immigration.
Initially purchased that flight but AC decided to cancel and rebook unfortunately - nonstop was my initial plan
