Hi all, I am really trying to pivot into PM, but I am running into hurdles with my history. I do have several years of project management experience, but no formal certifications. My current employer utilizes Kanban, but we don’t use WIP boards (we basically have to memorize where all our projects are at). We only use a CRM to manage our projects. I’m trying to get a Google project management certificate, as this counts towards the PMP, but I’m too burnt out. Any recs for courses/carts?

I didn't take any certification courses when I switched from project to product management. I got my start in product by taking a product management internship (and a huge paycut) and then worked my way up from an intern -> associate product manager -> product manager. Everyone's journey is different, but I'd recommend considering entry level product jobs or product positions at smaller companies where you can get product experience by entering a less competitive company.

From what I have seen in my career, certifications don't mean much. It's the experience you have in your role that really makes a difference in helping you land your next role.

Are you looking for a role in project management or product management? Feels like you are using the terms interchangeably.

like

I agree. Project Management certifications will not help you land a Product Manager role. As others have stated, reach out to PMs or POs in your organization for information or guidance. You should also consider joining the WIP (Women in Product) FB group and Becoming WIP on Slack. The University of Washington's business school has a geat product management center and program.

*certs, sorry for the typo.

Basically, I feel like I’m set up for failure in my current role and desperate to get out. Any recommendations for additional courses or certifications I can take for a successful pívot?

You can obtain your CSPO and/or SAFe certifications, but that's only one piece of the puzzle. Your resume must reflect skills that are transferable for the PM role, and you need to be prepared for PM interviews. Check out Diego Granados on YouTube and LinkedIn. His content is amazing. Via his LinkedIn page, you'll find other experienced PMs who are helping aspiring and current PMs.

What’s your current role ? May be easier to transition internally. You need to build a business case for yourself.

Can you meet with pms within your org and help them with anything just to gain some experience/knowledge? I think finding pms to chat with will be helpful. I don’t think an additional cert is necessary but there are lots of free courses online as well as YouTube channels that could help you break in.

Is there such things as FP&A positions in Big 4? If so, are there better times to make the change than others (I.e. at senior vs manager)? I’m currently in FP&A and looking to work at a Big 4, or another company that offers the ability to move abroad. My current company and many others I know about do not offer the mobility to do so until much later, which is not what I want. Thank you.

For those who have taken it, are there any cheaper or alternative study materials to any official guides you would recommend? I went this route with the PHR and SHRM-SCP and passed each on the both try, so I wanted to see if that method may be viable here. Any recommended order to take courses in?
