It could be discrimination. At my last company, women and minorities were significantly underpaid compared to the men (for the same position/title) and it was well known in management. I ended up leaving because I felt underpaid and undervalued but I had no idea how bad the pay gap was until after I left.
Sorry to hear that! But also taking inspiration from your move out of a bad situation!
Unfortunately your best option is just to find another role. They’ll offer competing but you’re best to leave because they’re paying you less cause they can.
You can do the legwork internally for a lift but depending on your company hr/payband restrictions often tie the hands of managers who know they have a problem & try to fix.
In case they ask, how did you find out you were the lowest paid colleague? Also, I would try to find out the company range for your level & experience. Then, rephrase the convo based on your accomplishments and responsibilities are not aligned with the company range & the industry range. IDK if that will help, that's what I would do.
Be careful saying you takes about salary with a co worker. I’d do some market research for you area and job type, as well as understanding the ranges. Use the I know card last. While the company can’t stop you from talking about money, some leaders look down on it. You don’t want to have a bad rep
How long have you been there? I would request feedback.
About a year now..we have weekly goals check ins and I make sure to ask for feedback but haven’t heard any constructive criticism etc. When time comes to set goals I’m usually made to set them first and their goals for me just mirror what I’ve outlined
Pro
Personally I would leave. The culture will not change—and it’s not worth staying at company that does not value you or pay you your worth
Did you negotiate? I have two direct reports, one of which makes $12k base more than the other (the gal makes more which is hype), but I was told that the only reason her base is so much higher is simply because she asked for it (and it was in band)
