Those roles turnover a lot. Some hospitals have their own internal temp staffing organization. Ex I live in Boston and Mass General Hospital has something called the Bullfinch Temp Service that they use to fill reception and other jobs until a permanent person is hired. But if you can get a temp assignment and the office likes you they will just hire you.
Can you research local health systems, contact HR, other people you know that work at the healthcare systems and see if they have a temp service you can apply into?
Heck even if you have a job and don’t want to leave it for a temp role … and they have an assignment for 5 days I would take vacation at my current job > work the 5 day temp job at the system > be super kind, self starting, and meet as many people as possible (go to lunch with the staff … you’ll meet a ton of people) and let them know you want a permanent job. Hope this helps.
Sounds good but also ask the healthcare system if they have their own internal temp agency. It’s literally a department inside the healthcare system. It’s not an external agency. It’s part of the system. Hope this makes sense. Sometimes it’s referred to as the cross-functional internal staffing group, the shared services staffing pool, the internal float team, etc.
Truthfully I applied as a medical receptionist at an obgyn practice with zero experience of healthcare but I have lots of experience in retail and customer service. That’s what it’s really all about. I learned everything at the job site from medical terminology, to being cross trained in medical billing and coding which most practices require a certification in but the practice I was with for a year had me learn on the job to help out the team. It really does just depend where you apply and if they’re willing to take a chance on you.
Thank you so much. Your advice has been so helpful and so kind. Seriously, you have no idea how much I appreciate it. I'll definitely keep your tip in mind if I ever get called in for an interview.
Do billing/coding certifications or rhit leaves you open for future growth. I would look for roles in data entry to start. It is hard to break in but once you do there is alot of growth in billing/ coding & rhit roles. I would look into community colleges that offer this as you could utilize grants and federal loans most programs are offered online.
Thank you so much for the tip! I sincerely appreciate it. Hopefully fafsa can still help me out if I decide to go back to school.
There is no such thing as data entry anymore. Get a CRCR through HFMA and you’re a shoe in.
