Hi everyone, I was affected by the federal layoffs a few months ago and am struggling to get calls back on job applications I've filled out. I'm wondering if anyone had any advice or guidance.

For background: I have approximately 8 years of communications work experience, mainly in internal and executive communications. I have a few years of supervisory experience as well. BA in Psychology, MA in International Business.

I'm really ready to get back out there, does anyone have any suggestions?

What do you specifically do?

Here are a few things:

Intranet and external website content development and governance (Drupal, SharePoint)

Internal newsletter creation and distribution

Press release and executive communications drafting (memos, speeches, talking points)

Virtual event planning and execution (webinars, town halls, leadership briefings)

Internal communications strategy and campaign development

Stakeholder engagement and message alignment across departments and leadership levels

Change communications planning tied to system rollouts, policy changes, or reorgs

Visual content support (infographics, branded templates, event collateral)

Communications calendar management and sequencing

Metrics tracking and impact reporting for comms effectiveness

Have you tried seeing if you know someone who works at the companies you’re applying to? Sometimes having a referral from within the company will help get your résumé in the pile that recruiters and hiring managers are prioritizing.

Yes, I've received a few referrals but unfortunately many of my contacts were also laid off!

- Where are you based?
- Where have you applied - govt. or private sector?
- How many apps have you sent out?
- What does your network look like? Do you have useful contacts?

The market is horrendous right now, people regularly send out hundreds of applications without hearing back anything.

Open to moving? We’re one of a few agencies hiring in SF.
