NEVER quit a job without having one lined up regardless of the job market and economy and when you do, I would recommend giving two weeks' notice.
In my experience, I would not give the notice until the background check / drug test are complete and you have been given the green light as who knows whether the results will be delayed or completely messed up. I had a background check done incorrectly that cost me a contract to hire role.
I'm going to wait until I get an unconditional offer before I say a word to anyone at my current role. My current jobs hell but it's still money!
