Because this industry runs on exploitation and ego. They dangle “the dream” so we’ll work ourselves to death for scraps and a credit. Refusing to burn out doesn’t make you lazy — it makes you awake.
Hustle culture in a nutshell. You're expected to sacrifice all your free time for the faint hope of advancing your career. It's stupid and draining, but that's kind of the nature of the industry.
I totally get where you’re coming from. It's crazy how often burnout gets framed as a badge of honor. The reality is that you can't bring your best work if you’re running on empty. Setting boundaries should be seen as a strength, not a weakness. Have you noticed any positive changes in your work or life since you started prioritizing your time better?
I am so glad you put this out there. I am constantly criticized for asking for OT when I work past my shift. An hourly employee is due the money if they work over time. I am also constantly compared to others who work over and never ask for overtime. Shame on those people who work for free.
There is a phrase that we use as a warning to people starting in the entertainment industry, "today's favour is tomorrow's obligation", a warning to everyone about "volunteering" their time!
Can’t bring myself to argue in favor of being overworked and underpaid, however what do I do when there really isn’t an option to set boundaries? I’ve seen people try and they do not get to stick around for long. Also in a spot where I’m not seeing anything else out there for me to do.
It is one of the main reasons why I stepped away from film/TV and recently games. The exploitation of your effort and creativity just to benefit the scant few is a losing proposition. Even if the industry doesn't believe in your worth, just know that all of us who did leave for that reason have all the respect for you for doing so. It's a hard life and ultimately relies on who you know over what you know.
Why not sue them? Nobody works for free this ain't Cuba so let 'em know a dose of reality
I think there’s a level of “I had to do it so now you have to” that’s prevalent in this industry that we need to quash. At what point do we stop being petty and stop the cycle of overworking for the sake of it?
I don’t understand how in every aspect of the world they push family bonding and recreational activities but don’t let anyone actually use that time without guilt
