In my current job I am not allowed to share my salary, it is higher than many colleagues as well as my responsibilities, I do not agree but I could not just say it when my boss explicitly told me not to do it.
I don't know what it's like to be in your colleague's situation but I don't think it makes sense for her to hide her salary, in fact it seems to me that it should be less secret so that other people know how much they can get.
Personally, I have no problem sharing my salary. It's not like I lose it by saying it so I don't really see a problem with it, but I understand that there are people who don't feel comfortable saying it out loud for their own reasons.
I don't feel comfortable sharing my salary because I always feel that people think I make more money than I deserve and don't like it. It is very useful to share it with colleagues to be aware of the market salary trend, so I can do it anonymously.
I'm someone who believes strongly in pay transparency. If the employer can't justify salary discrepancies based on experience, qualifications etc. then that discrepancy probably shouldn't be there. We can't deal with unfair wage gaps if we aren't being upfront.
I share the same sentiments with NE1. It just seems like an opportunity for my imposter syndrome to kick back in. I'd rather not give myself any room to overthink things.
I'd feel the same way too. I won't be comfortable sharing my salary. It doesn't mean that you also have to get the same salary as him without considering other factors like the industry, company, YOE and skills.
