My brother went to collage for
Film….. hope that helps
It seems the best way is to put on your producer hat & create films to direct until producers notice what you can do
You have to get on a set, network, establish apprenticeships & leverage that to pivot after you’ve got visibility.
These days you can get attention with personal projects that helps you establish a reputation and accelerate the earlier steps.
Film school can be valuable for networking but most don’t need it.
I started out as an actor and then transitioned into directing. I found that I loved being able to tell a story and work with a team to bring it to life. I started out small, doing short films and then moved up to larger productions.
I started out as an assistant director on a small budget film. That experience gave me the opportunity to learn about all of the different aspects of making a movie. I then moved up to directing short films and music videos, which helped me develop my own voice and style. My last step was to direct my first feature film.
I studied film and got into gigs as a runner for film sets. Then I shadowed a director as an assistant after a few years. I also got into editing for a while until I partnered with indie filmmakers as 3rd and 2nd assistant directors. I worked my way up from there.
I have a friend who did it, they did a lot of runner roles and networking before diving in to directing
I started from the bottom. From PA to Assistant manager to assistant director. Then 5 years after I was given the opportunity to direct a small project.
