It’s funny that you mention that, I had job where the EL was Puerto Rican and my Manager was Chinese. I had to “translate” for the EL. Unfortunately as I get older it becomes even harder for me to understand people from Ireland and India. There is something in the tone that causes me to not be able to understand.
More exposure. Trying eating lunch around them or just sitting near them in general. You don’t have to talk to them during this time (unless you want to) but listening to what they’re saying will eventually make it easier to understand them.
Being a military kid I was blessed with being able to go to a lot of different places and come across people from different origins that had decently thick accents. For me, my ears just have to get accustomed to their cadence and then I can understand them. Years ago I was on Guam working, in our store most of the people were either Filipino or Chamorro descent - That’s the indigenous people on Guam. Somebody ran back and said we need you out front because we can’t understand this lady we need you to come. I went out front and it was a German lady with a thick accent nobody else could understand her but me!!
