Our restructuring arms are, as you are aware, best in class. A&M's other arms (corporate consulting, PE consulting, and other general advisory) are not always the leaders in their field.
Our equivalent of transaction services (accounting services for deals) is one of the best outside of big 4, targeting middle market transactions.
Our PE consulting (PEPI) arm is quite strong as well, doing a lot of middle market PE-owned portfolio company performance improvement work.
Am currently working on a corporate consulting (CPI) project that is with a legacy MBB client. In other words, we can be competitive against them in certain contexts and projects.
Due diligences, operational performance improvement (EBITDA)
Alix and A&M are best in class here with McKinsey RTS, FTI and a few other are tied as a very distant third. BCG TURN is relatively new in the market but hasn’t really changed things up in the short term.
If you are talking traditional consulting, Alix is fast growing and has similar compensation at least at mid to lower levels, but doesn’t have the breath of experience as MBB. i would argue though this is a better place than much of what is described as tier-2 on this site.Enterprise Improvement is our fastest growing group.
Our hiring is generally done into functional group / industry team. Our MBA hires can also be part of a generalist group, but the idea is you’d join a team within a few years.
Similar comp. Strong in their niche. Worth understanding the differences in the models (ie focus on financial engineering, stepping into line roles, advising, shopping, etc). Bain doesn’t have an equivalent offering to RTS or TURN AFAIK.
thanks for the comments. One more question, in terms of hiring, does the Turn team hire their specifically for their team? Or does everyone simply go through the general consultant hiring process and get staffed occasionally for restructuring projects?
