This happened to me. I decided it was worse for my mental health to stay in a toxic environment and it was slowing down my progress in finding a new opportunity. One foot in, one foot out doesn’t always work and it can be emotionally draining and depressing. So I quit with no back up plan. It was risky but it lit a fire under me and I ended up booking a freelance gig a week later. Then more opportunities popped up soon after. I know it’s scary but I’m so glad I removed myself from a terrible environment.
Do minimal work and focus your time on yourself and getting out of the situation.
^HR is not there to help you. They will protect your boss.

I did the same as Freelance 1 and I’m glad I did.
In this type of situation I’ve started my search and accepted that if they want to get rid of me they have to fire me, pay severance hopefully, and allow for unemployment insurance pay. Being a jerk until you quit is the more cost effective and cowardly solution for your boss. Don’t give them that satisfaction of leaving on your own and giving yourself the challenge of paying bills because they couldn’t go through the process of either coaching for improvement (as they should) or writing you up and then telling you face to face that they are letting you go. Be strong. Say positive things to yourself in the morning and go in there and handle your business for yourself. You got this
