How do you all deal with it when you’re stuck working holidays like today? It’s already tough missing out on so many weekends and birthdays, but something about being here while everyone else is at BBQs or the lake just hits different. I’m trying to stay positive, but honestly, it feels like I’m always the one missing out. How do you cope with the FOMO and not let it eat at you?

You don’t. You just remind yourself you’re getting time-and-a-half while they’re burning hot dogs.

I make it up on another day. Goes for all the celebrations I might miss because of work. I remember having to work Christmas day for years and I’d make it a point to do something on my first day off around it. Just recalculating a bit, not missing out.

This one isn't as bad because we close early and the 4th isn't that important to me personally. Working Thanksgiving or Christmas is a different story. I don't think it's possible not to feel some amount of FOMO, you just have to try to shut it out as best you can and make the most of the days you do have off.

This used to happen to me a lot because I was always the one working the holidays. I think now I have gotten so used to it that it doesn't really bother me anymore. I kind of just embrace working the holidays.

Yeah, I’m missing out on all the fun parts of life is the downfall of working in a customer facing industry. While, other companies are off. We have to be open because people like to go out and do stuff on holidays. I feel your pain.

This may sound corny but I have found the secret is to be someplace you truly enjoy and to have a good team that also adds to the enjoyment. You're not missing anything if you're already where you want to be and you get creative about how you balance your time. I know some people have their family as guests at their restaurant on occasions when they have to work, to include birthdays. They may not be at the table in person for the whole event, but they can be there in spirit as the person who made a favorite dish or special dessert for their loved ones.

Oh that’s such a great idea! If you can’t be there, bring your friends and family to you!

I work as an AGM in a busy restaurant. Been working there for just over a year, and haven't had a single raise. I now only make 0.50 cents more than even the lowest paid shift lead but I am doing a lot more work. I'm no longer satisfied with these conditions. Should I try to negotiate a raise or look for other opportunities?

If I should negotiate, any tips?
