You do not have to ask for PTO. You need to give your team leader appropriate notice (clarify when you join a project what the amount of notice should be) and then ensure that the people covering for you know what they need to know to get the job done.
Point is though that it’s your PTO to take.
On my project, we just put the time on the appropriate people’s calendars and coordinate any necessary coverage. I’ve never run into a scenario where it was an issue.
anything that is 2-3 days or less I just talk with my lead and coordinate backup and priorities, any longer PTO my lead runs by my senior manager with my backup plan to see if there are any concerns—but in general my team is super flexible and like D1 said it more of a notice with backup plan than an ask
I don’t ask. I just book it and let the team know.
I tell them I'm going on PTO.
