That’s exactly what you want tho.
No one ever comes out of a conversation thinking “This person was so lame, I yapped for 30 mins and they listened attentively! What a loser!!”
Realistically, referrals count for nothing if it’s just someone putting you in the system. If you want a REAL referral, you’ll have to establish a relationship with them, so they can put your profile in front of the hiring manager directly, thus bypassing the ATS. Exactly this. The best way to make a good impression is for the person you are with leave feeling good, and you do that by smiling and nodding no matter how boring they are. Be engaged, ask questions, subtle act impressed by something they said. They'll remember you for how they felt when they had coffee with you, and that can be a big help down the road.
